2013 Bafta Nominations Revealed

US cinema leads the way in the 2013 Bafta nominations. Indeed, the hotly anticipated film, Lincoln, has 10 nominations including Best Film and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis while Les Miserables flies the flag for Britain with 9 nominations.

Here is a summary of the 2013 nominations:

Lincoln - 10
Les Miserables - 9
Life Of Pi - 9
Skyfall (pictured) - 8
Argo - 7
Anna Karenina - 6

Critics have been divided over the forthcoming US civil war drama, Lincoln, but it seems there is no doubt where Daniel Day-Lewis is concerned. According to film critic, Mark Kermode, Day-Lewis commands the viewer's attention with his powerful performance as do his co-stars, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, who have been shortlisted for Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Having been nominated in 10 categories, it is hard to ignore this film whatever your opinion may be:

Despite being heavily dominated by US films, several British films have received a nod from the critics: Skyfall, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Anna Karenina, Les Miserables, and Seven Psychopaths all have nominations. Dame Helen Mirren has been shortlisted in the Best Actress category for her role as Alfred Hitchcock's wife in Hitchcock while Javier Bardem and Judi Dench (both Skyfall) are nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively. Indeed, Skyfall has 8 nominations in total including Best British Film but failed to impress the critics in the Best Film and Best Actor categories. This may seem surprising to some as James Bond star Daniel Craig has previously been nominated in the acting category for his role as the super slick spy in Casino Royale. In fact, the Bond franchise is still awaiting its first nomination for Best Film after 50 years of Box Office hits.

The category of Best Director includes two noticeable absences this year: award-winning director Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and Sam Mendes (Skyfall) have been omitted. Personally, I hope to see Ben Afleck scoop this award for Argo having received a nomination in this category and Best Actor. The political thriller received 7 well deserved nominations, however, Les Miserables and Ang Lee's Life of Pi are tipped to win big this year. I will leave it for you to make up your own mind:

The awards ceremony will take place on 10 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London and will be hosted by Stephen Fry. Along with the Golden Globes, the Bafta Awards are often seen as an indication as to which films will scoop the major awards at the Oscars.
